Knowing more about Thermal Infrared Imaging

category: Infared Training author: thermali

The science of engineering has evolved over the past few decades. In the earlier times the designs were less complicated and more accessible. Most of the work could be done by temperature probes. However, today we have a situation where the technology has advanced so much that the designs have become more complex and disperse more power per square centimeter.

In such a situation it becomes very difficult to get exact contact measurements for complex design structures or for moving materials as can be found in the production of steel, paper, etc. This is where thermal infrared imaging has found favor with a lot of engineering professionals and companies. Thermal infrared imaging is a non contact measurement technology that can measure the temperatures of any kind of surface very accurately.

In the earlier times thermal infra red imaging technology was used purely for military applications. This technology was used to develop infrared detectors which could be used for locating targets, tracking purposes and intelligence purposes. This technology was also used in advanced weapons guidance systems. Later on its application was extended to surveillance and intrusion systems.

Today, we find this technology being used for mapping purposes and temperature measurement, multi dimensional earth imaging, to identify forest fires and contain them. This is also used in urban surveillance systems. Most of the applications can be tracked over long distances and in any kind of atmospheric conditions. Finally, the thermal infra red technology can be found in a wide range of applications like medical systems, precision instruments, etc.
